Jamie Foxx recounts the behind-the-scenes story of Leonardo DiCaprio's struggle to say the n-word while filming 'Django Unchained', ultimately leading to a chilling and award-worthy performance.
Jamie Foxx recently shared an interesting behind-the-scenes story from the making of Quentin Tarantino 's ' Django Unchained '. The film, a stylish and controversial take on the Western genre, starred Foxx as Django, a freed slave turned bounty hunter, and Leonardo DiCaprio as the menacing plantation owner Calvin Candie. In a new video with Vanity Fair, Foxx recounted how DiCaprio initially struggled to say the n-word during filming.
He explained that DiCaprio, known for his method acting, felt uncomfortable with the word and couldn't bring himself to utter it. Samuel L. Jackson, who played the role of Stephen, Django's friend and fellow bounty hunter, urged DiCaprio to get into character and simply say the word. Foxx, wanting DiCaprio to fully embody the horrors of slavery that Django faced, also had a direct conversation with him. He reminded DiCaprio that in the context of slavery, individuals wouldn't have the same casual relationships. He encouraged DiCaprio to understand the weight of the word and how it represented the dehumanization of Black people during that era. The next day, Foxx noticed a change in DiCaprio's demeanor. He was ready to fully commit to the role. This marked a turning point for DiCaprio's performance. He embraced the darkness of Calvin Candie and delivered a chilling portrayal of a racist slave owner. His decision to overcome his personal discomfort with the word ultimately contributed to the film's powerful and controversial impact. Tarantino's 'Django Unchained' sparked debate about the use of racial slurs in film, but many argued that it was necessary to accurately depict the realities of slavery. DiCaprio's performance, fueled by his willingness to say the word, became a key element in the film's exploration of racism and its lasting consequences
