Carla Lockhart says loyalist activist subjected to a 'character assassination'
Jamie Bryson clashed with Northern Ireland Affairs Committee MPs on Tuesday over his use of the words ‘collaborator’ and ‘subjugation’.
Later Robert Buckland told Jamie Bryson the changing of the Act of Union and Parliament’s ability to ‘modify’ the law was a “fundamental tenant of British constitutional law” adding “that’s Parliamentary supremacy”. He accused Mr Bryson of using the term in a “very pejorative way” and asked him “as a British loyalist why can’t you accept” what is a “fundamental legal reality”. He added: “If you’re going to quote the Supreme Court get it right.
During an appearance before the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee, Mr Bryson also called on the police to tackle any loyalist paramilitary groups who are involved in criminality. Referring to the letter sent by Mr Bryson, committee chair Simon Hoare said the correspondence had “explicitly threatened violence on the streets”.
Mr Bryson said: “I represent various lobbying groups, advocacy groups, and Jeffrey Donaldson engages with me to hear the views of those groups. Jeffrey Donaldson engages with many groups across the piste. Mr Bryson was giving evidence to the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee which is investigating the effect of paramilitary activity and organised crime on society in the region.
“I said right at the start when I was elected as chairman back in 2019 that I wanted to hear as many voices as possible in Northern Ireland to ensure that our knowledge base was as full as it possibly could be.”She added: “Disappointing with the attendance and disappointing that the voice of loyalism hasn’t warranted attendance by some from across the board. Very disappointing and I think that will not be lost on the people back in Northern Ireland.
