James Turrell's Skyspace at Rice turns 10. The woman who funded his $5 million commission looks back

The crown jewel of the festivities is an appearance by Turrell. He and Deal Booth, whose $5 million gift funded the construction of “Twilight Epiphany,” are honorees at Saturday night’s fundraising dinner.

Dallas-born Deal Booth remembers the night she met Turrell — it was the early 1980s, at a loft party in downtown Manhattan. She was 29, studying art history at New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts and living in Dominique de Menil’s townhouse on East 73rd Street. Despite being the new kid in the room, something about Deal Booth made an impression on Turrell. After their second encounter, a chance run-in in London, he offered her a job.

“I introduced him to my brother-in-law and others who became big patrons of his art,” she shares. “I did, too, when I came into a position where I could.” “In Dominique’s case, I reminded her of someone she was close to. Maybe it was the same with James,” Deal Booth says. “Like-minded people do like each other, and I was very eager. And earnest — I don’t have a lot of pretensions. If there was an experience I fit into, I wanted to do it. I was curious, I guess.”
