Born March 5, 1934, in Los Angeles, Calif., the actor was named James Barrie Sikking after the renownedauthor. The tone-setting cop drama debuted to critical acclaim and went on to span seven seasons, which earned 26 Emmy Awards during its run, including four consecutive wins for Outstanding Drama Series. Sikking received an Emmy nomination for his performance in 1984.Sikking said that he based his performance on a drill instructor he’d encountered during basic training, when military service interrupted his time at UCLA.
