Outman leads the Dodgers in hits and is tied for the lead in RBI this spring and could force his way onto the season-opening roster.
GLENDALE, Ariz – The Dodgers came to spring training with an idea of how things would most likely play out in their outfield.
Steven Duggar and Bradley Zimmer were lined up as experienced depth ticketed for Triple-A Oklahoma City – where they would likely share the outfield with James Outman as he continued to smooth the rough edges in his promising game.“I don’t think it really is,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Sunday with a smile. “It’s still pretty muddy.”
“You can just see the head, the mechanics, the physicality,” Roberts said of Outman. “Is he big-league ready? I would say he is. But how we shake out — that’s a different question. He’s doing everything he can do.”Last July, Outman hit a home run in his first major-league at-bat then later added a single and a double in his first game, become the first Dodgers rookie to have three or more hits in his MLB debut since Mike Piazza in Sept. 1992.
