The Sixers got a measure of revenge for their earlier loss to the Magic with a 105-94 win, but the feisty squad from Orlando made them work for it.
Sixers Tobias Harris shoots over Magic Franz Wagner during the second quarter action at the Wells Fargo Center. The Sixers won 105-94.Georges Niang swiped a bad pass from Franz Wagner and dished to Tyrese Maxey, who could finally casually dribble the ball to run out the clock.
The Sixers made their decisive charge with a 16-4 run after a Jalen Suggs three-pointer cut the lead to 82-81. That surge was fueled by the long ball, with Shake Milton, James Harden, Maxey, and Niang all burying three-pointers to push the advantage back out to 98-85 with less than 7 minutes remaining. It was a fitting way for the Sixers to create their distance, as they went 14 of 35 from long range on the night while the Magic sank just 6 of 38 shots from behind the arc.
The Sixers next play three consecutive road games on Friday at the San Antonio Spurs, Sunday at the New York Knicks and next Wednesday at the Eastern Conference-leading Boston Celtics. The Sixers’ second unit struggled offensively, particularly while Embiid was off the floor in the first half. The normally dynamic Tyrese Maxey went 2 of 11 from the floor for 10 points, and the normally sharpshooting Niang missed five of his six three-point attempts.
And as the Magic made their second-quarter charge, Doc Rivers replaced backup center Montrezl Harrell with Paul Reed. After Reed was ineffective in three first-half minutes, however, Harrell was again Embiid’s sub late in the third period.
