The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special writer-director James Gunn reveals the script was surprisingly easy for him to write. He reveals that while making Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was "torture" trying to get everything right, the Holiday Special came much more naturally. Gunn says "it just kind of spilled out of me" in a few hours, with the character dynamics and performance direction unfolding before him.

The project also sees him reuniting the Guardians cast before having to say farewell to them with the third film.
The upcoming Guardians film will have to grapple with the more intense implications of the previous MCU films, which will see Star-Lord still trying to overcome the loss of Gamora . The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will be allowed to be a lot goofier, which likely means it will be a hit with fans of Gunn's contributions to the series.
