Margot Robbie smiling as Harley Quinn in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad
One of the spinoffs that has been in the works from James Gunn's The Suicide Squad finally gets a promising DC Universe update. In a new interview with Variety, HBO's Casey Bloys was asked about the Waller TV series starring Viola Davis' Amanda Waller, who is one of the few players carried over from the DCEU into Gunn's DCU franchise.
In terms of its chances of going into production anytime soon, Bloys stated, "Put it this way, I wouldn’t say it’s on the runway. But “Lanterns” is coming up this summer." While there was no follow-up, the Waller TV show has not been cancelled, as it's still in development. Bloys, however, was asked whether it's a conscious strategy for DC shows on HBO to take longer to be worked on versus the pacing of Disney+'s Marvel Studios series. It's indeed something they are doing on purpose, saying the following response about the importance of an IP like the DCU getting shows produced on HBO and/or HBO Max: Casey Bloys: That was deliberate because I do it based on the script. More than anything else — forget about anybody, any plan or anything like that — you have to do it based script by script. Is it a good script? Do we think it’s interesting creatively? Do we think it makes sense as a show? So for me, personally, I think anytime you lay out a thing dictating in advance how many shows you’re going to have per year, it sets up an opportunity where you might compromise creatively. And so I think it’s always better just start every project “What do we think of what’s in front of us here?” versus, well, “If we don’t have this one, we can’t have that one.” You’ve got to start with what’s in front of you. Why Has Waller Been Taking So Long To Happen? Since the formation of DC Studios and the launch of the DCU's Chapter 1:"Gods and Monsters" slate, Gunn and his co-CEO Peter Safran have made it very clear that they will not be rushing development on any film or TV show that they have in the works. While Waller, along with other projects, was announced all the way back in January 2023, Davis' offshoot has remained a priority for DC Studios. While Gunn confirmed in August 2025 that Waller is delayed, he is determined to get Amanda's solo project off the ground. He stated at the time, "We're working on it but, you know, some things have moved really fastly, and some things not so fast, and that's been a thing that hasn't moved so fast. But I can't wait to see Viola get her Waller outfits on, with her s---ty floral dresses, and do something special." Even if things have been moving more slowly for Waller, they have a solid creative team with Watchmen TV show scribe Christal Henry and Doom Patrol creator Jeremy Carver, meaning the wait will be worth it in the end. Davis, who is also an executive producer of her own spinoff, is also a high-profile talent that HBO and DC Studios won't scrap a potential DC prestige series. Given Amanda's rich history in the DC canon, there are a lot of directions they can take with her in Waller, which can also be why it's taking longer for the project to go forward. It may be a creative debate about what story to go with for her. As Amanda's government actions with the Suicide Squad were exposed to the public, her return in Creature Commandos made it clear that she is operating more carefully than ever, which is bound to be reflected upon in Waller. Will Amanda Waller Be In Any DCU Projects In 2026? At the time of this story's publication, Davis' Amanda Waller has not been officially revealed to be involved in any of the DCU's upcoming releases in 2026. While DC Studios has Supergirl and Clayface for June 26 and October 23, respectively, her character doesn't really fit in with either player. HBO's Lanterns TV show, which premieres in August, will also not have her involved, unless Davis filmed something as intended for a potential surprise cameo.
