The conspiracy theory started after Nathan Fillion mentioned he was told by Gunn at The Suicide Squad wrap party that he would play the Green Lantern Guy Gardner. However, Gunn revealed that it was actually the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 wrap party. That cleared up any confusion regarding the timeline of Cavill's recasting, with Gunn's Superman having always been a new story, which will play out in the DCU's Chapter One and beyond.
That creative choice was not met with positive reception, and Cavill leaving the role for the new DC Universe ended up being the perfect way to course-correct Superman's live-action movie image. Superman and the DCEU as a whole have faced a lot of criticism over the years. Even if Cavill had stayed on as a different version of Superman, the mere fact that the actor was kept would add to some heavy baggage that the new DC Universe simply does not need to deal with.
