James Corden and Reggie Watts, the bandleader on the comedian's late-night show, are opening up about race.

"I've been struggling all weekend wondering what to say to you tonight, because who needs my opinion?" Corden, 41, said in ."Like, why is my voice relevant? There is not one person in the world who woke up this morning and thought, 'I need to know what James Corden thinks about all of this.

'""People like me have to speak up," he continued."And to be clear, I'm not talking about late-night hosts, or people who are fortunate enough to have a platform. I'm talking about white people." Corden then spoke with Watts, who opened up about his childhood. Watts appeared on the show via video chat. Watts recalled how, when he was growing up, his parents did their best to stand up to racism in their neighborhood. "My mom was a fierce fighter and would get out of the house and get in people's faces about people calling me the N-word," the 48-year-old musician said. Watts also described struggles his family has had to face, such as how, after serving in the Vietnam War, his father was unable to find work because he was black. As a result, he had to re-enlist and go back to Vietnam. Watts also said his parents' marriage wasn't recognized because of laws prohibiting interracial marriage. Watts also mentioned that his cousin, Alice Walker, used her experiences as inspiration for her novel"The Color Purple," which won a Pulitzer Prize. "I have this history in the black community in the Midwest that I don't access a lot, because there's a lot of pain and emotion there," he added, before breaking down in tears."I'm so sorry that you're feeling this, and I would give anything to be in a room with you and put my arm around you," said Corden, who was also tearing up."I would give anything to put my arm around you.""I grew up all my life really fighting to be a human being," he said. "I'm trying my best to process and be responsible with the platform I have."
