The Democratic strategist called it a 'shortcoming' of the party to think 'everybody has a seat at the table.'

Longtime Democratic strategist James Carville said Friday that the Democratic Party's campaigns should function under one person’s authority, cautioning against "inclusive" approaches.
“I would always tell people in the campaigns: If you want a democracy after the election, you have to have an autocracy before the election,” Carville said in a Playbook Deep Dive interview. The strategist noted it is “absolutely” true the theory applies to creative projects, like an upcoming documentary about his political work that he promoted during the podcast. “If you have one creative person with an IQ of 150, that’s great. If you have three with an IQ of 150, the IQ is not 450. It’s 50,” he said. “So, I just believe that on a creative project, you just gotta have one person in charge and kind of trust them. Because if you start switching crap around, it just never works.” To be a part of the Democratic Party is to be a part of a coalition, which is designed to make people “uncomfortable,” according to the strategist. If you're in a coalition, and you’re comfortable, you’re not in a coalition,” Carville said, adding that the Democratic Party has supporters across the political spectrum. “Now, our coalition goes from Dick Cheney to Pramila Jayapal,” he noted, referencing the former vice president of the George W. Bush administration and a Democratic congresswoman from Washington state. “Somebody is going to be uncomfortable in this coalition.”The party should resolve any internal “contradictions” after the election, according to the strategist. He said Democrats focus too much on internal inclusivity, which is one of the party’s downfalls. When I hear people say we gotta have an inclusive – and we gotta listen to everybody – no, you don’t,” Carville argued. “It’s been always, I think, a shortcoming of the Democratic politics, that everybody has a seat at the table, and everybody can be heard,” he added. “No. Not everybody’s skillset is equal.”
