James Cameron, 'Part 1 Athlete', Season 1, ep. 101, aired June 7, 2023
Filmmaker James Cameron is bringing a fantastic grimdark book to life, and he needs to learn one lesson from his first Avatar movie. Cameron is best known for his Avatar franchise, which is currently in flux.
Disney has not confirmed whether they’re cancelling Avatar 4 and 5, and there’s no guarantee they’ll keep him on as director. However, Cameron actually has many more exciting movies on the horizon. He’s writing and producing a new Terminator movie and Alita: Battle Angel 2, and he’s directing Ghosts of Hiroshima, based on the books by Charles Pellegrino. Possibly his most exciting project, though, is a movie adaptation of an instant bestseller that appeared on the New York Times, USA Today, and Indie bestseller lists. Additionally, the movie will be his first foray into full-on fantasy. However, the filmmaker needs to learn one big lesson from his most famous project. James Cameron Is Adapting The Devils By Joe Abercrombie In June 2025, James Cameron announced that his company, Lightstorm Entertainment, had acquired the rights to the book The Devils by Joe Abercrombie, and that he would co-write the script with the author. He explained that he decided to pick up the book after reading it aloud to his wife. Cameron enjoyed how completely unhinged the story was. The grimdark story is amazing. Set in a medieval-inspired Europe infested with supernatural beings, the Church recruits a group of convicted monsters and villains to escort a con artist who was born a princess to the throne of Troy. The story features a necromancer, an immortal and cursed knight, a vampire, a Scandinavian werewolf, a mysterious jack-of-all-trades, and an elf who can turn invisible. However, they’ll have to survive flesh-eating elves. James Cameron told Empire, “The whole thing is off its tits. It’s nuts.” It’s a passion project, which could be a good thing. However, the Avatar movies were also a passion project, and the first one had a big issue that could ruin The Devils movie. The First Avatar Movie Was A Visual Spectacle But Narratively Shallow There’s zero question that James Cameron’s first Avatar movie had captivating visual effects. The film absolutely deserved its 2010 Oscars for Best Achievement in Visual Effects, Cinematography, and Art Direction. However, the visuals ultimately distracted from the fact that Avatar didn’t have a very good story. The “white savior swoops in to save the natives from the foreigners” storyline has been done to death. As such, it felt like Avatar was ripping off plotlines from Dances with Wolves, Call Me Joe, Pocahontas, FernGully, and even elements of the Dune book. They all came first, and they all did it better. It didn’t really become unique until the second Avatar movie. The Devils Movie Can't Overlook The Story In Favor Of Impressive VFX Joe Abercrombie’s The Devils book has everything necessary to be incredible, making the James Cameron project more exciting than the upcoming Avatar sequels. The characters are unique and robust. The hilarious story has plenty of action, gore, and plot twists. However, James Cameron could easily fall into the trap of prioritizing the medieval setting and VFX over the plot, given the book’s setting and genre. Grimdark stories are built on capturing a gritty, horror-esque aesthetic, which James Cameron will undoubtedly do well. He will also have to create his own version of medieval Europe for the film. However, that cannot be his sole focus when adapting The Devils. If Cameron is determined to co-write the script, he needs to devote time and focus to capturing the distinctive personalities of The Devils’ characters. Luckily, Cameron has the roadmap right in front of him and the author working alongside him. Cameron has the screenwriting experience. Abercrombie created the story and has experience in TV editing. Together, they could make the most brilliant fantasy film adaptation. The Devils Like Follow Followed Fantasy Action Adventure Director James Cameron Writers James Cameron, Joe Abercrombie
