James Cameron says he had the option to build a real, seaworthy Titanic for his movie 😮 'I said, ‘All right, great. So, they can build a Titanic for us for $10 million? Yeah, we should think about that. Now, if we sink it, how many takes do we get?’'🤣
Titanic director James Cameron explains why he chose not to build an actual recreation of the titular ship for his hit 1997 film. Based on the real-world tragedy that took place in 1912, Titanic tells the story of a wealthy young woman named Rose who falls in love with Jack , a poor artist, aboard the doomed R.M.S. Titanic. The film was a massive hit with audiences and critics and ended up winning 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In a recent interview with GQ, Cameron discusses the production process for Titanic and reveals that constructing an actual, seaworthy recreation of the vessel was a real option. He ultimately decided against rebuilding the ship due purely to pragmatic reasons, namely the fact that he wouldn't be able to do multiple takes for certain scenes.
We talked about literally going to the shipyard in Poland and building the Titanic. I said, ‘All right, great. So, they can build a Titanic for us for $10 million? Yeah, we should think about that. Now, if we sink it, how many takes do we get?’ ‘Hmm, one.’ You know what I mean? It’s like, ‘What if I want a second take?’ So, anyway, we decided not to build the Titanic as an actual floatable ship.
Outside of Titanic's impact on the world of visual effects, Cameron's comment makes clear that building a real version of the ship would have tied his hands in terms of how the sinking sequence is portrayed on screen. Despite now being 25 years old, the sinking of the Titanic remains an incredibly effective and intense portion of the film.
Despite the shortcomings associated with building a real Titanic ship, it's still interesting to imagine how the film may have turned out if Cameron had chosen to do it. The film's visual effects still hold up remarkably well today, but building a real ship may have resulted in select sequences being drastically different and potentially more life-like.
