A still of Neytiri in Avatar: Fire and Ash.
James Cameron just scored another major win in the premium format wars. Even if Avatar: Fire and Ash hasn’t matched the towering heights of its predecessors just yet, its IMAX performance proves Cameron’s visually driven sci-fi spectacle remains one of the most reliable draws in premium large-format cinemas.
But how much did it earn? Well, Avatar: Fire and Ash has officially surpassed Oppenheimer in total IMAX box office earnings, pushing the third Avatar film into the all-time top five highest-grossing IMAX releases worldwide. It’s a milestone not just for the movie, but for the franchise as a whole — all three Avatar films now sit inside IMAX’s global top five. According to industry tracking reports, Avatar: Fire and Ash has earned $184.1 million from IMAX screenings alone in just 47 days. That figure edges past Oppenheimer’s $184 million IMAX total. While crossing the $200 million IMAX mark now looks unlikely as the film gradually loses premium screens, the achievement still places the movie among the format’s most successful titles ever. This IMAX milestone comes as the film begins to slow domestically. After seven weekends, Avatar: Fire and Ash has grossed $386.1 million in North America. Overseas, the film continues to be a powerhouse, pulling in $1.02 billion, for a global total of approximately $1.4 billion. How Good Is 'Avatar: Fire and Ash'? Collider's review, written by Ross Bonaime, hailed the technical achievements of the movie — which are undeniable at this stage — but admitted that the magic was starting to dwindle as the plot inconsistencies came to the fore. He wrote: "This third Avatar film might not have the groundbreaking impact of the first film, or the vast improvement that The Way of Water had over what came before it, but Fire and Ash is still an exceptional moviegoing experience that proves there’s still plenty of gas in this tank. This newest Avatar entry might show that history is repeating itself, and the franchise could start spinning its wheels, but Cameron and his team give plenty to explore in the world and open up to in future installments. Fire and Ash proves yet again that no one is making action films — and films in general — quite like James Cameron." Avatar: Fire and Ash is currently playing in theaters worldwide, while Oppenheimer is available to stream now on Peacock. 7 10 Avatar: Fire and Ash Like Follow Followed PG-13 Science Fiction Adventure Fantasy Release Date December 19, 2025 Runtime 197 Minutes Director James Cameron Writers Amanda Silver, Rick Jaffa, James Cameron, Josh Friedman, Shane Salerno Producers Jon Landau, James Cameron 7 Images Close Cast See All
