Director James Cameron reveals Arnold Schwarzenegger will not be returning to the Terminator franchise in the upcoming Terminator 7, signaling a shift to a new generation of characters and a broader exploration of the Terminator universe. Cameron, promoting Avatar: Fire and Ash, discussed the narrative challenges of the new film and his desire to push the boundaries of science fiction.
As director James Cameron marks his long-awaited return to the franchise with Terminator 7 , he has just revealed whether there are plans to see Arnold Schwarznagger's return as the iconic character. While doing a cover piece for The Hollywood Reporter as he promoted Avatar: Fire And Ash, Cameron shared some details about his progress on Terminator 7 , confirming that he will"really plunge into that" once the promotion is over.
He iterates that,"There are a lot of narrative problems to solve. The biggest is how do I stay enough ahead of what’s really happening to make it science fiction?" When addressing Schwarzenegger's involvement, he confirmed that"I can safely say he won't be ." That means this would be the first Terminator movie without the major franchise star. The acclaimed filmmaker elaborated on the shocking decision, saying, “It’s time for a new generation of characters. I insisted Arnold had to be involved in Terminator: Dark Fate, and it was a great finish to him playing the T-800. There needs to be a broader interpretation of Terminator and the idea of a time war and super intelligence. I want to do new stuff that people aren’t imagining.” Since the franchise's inception, Schwarzenegger helped turn the titular character into an icon and has been a regular presence in the subsequent movies ever since. However, given the new update from Cameron, it appears that Dark Fate could mark the action star's final appearance as the iconic character if there are no further sequels beyond Terminator 7. The filmmaker, who ideated the sci-fi franchise with the 1984 installment, has been actively working on the seventh installment since 2022, as it marks his long-awaited return to the franchise. After directing The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Cameron was no longer involved with the franchise due to rights and script issues. He did act as a consultant and producer for Dark Fate. However, Cameron admitted that having Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton return for Dark Fate was a mistake. Furthermore, it already seems that the upcoming sequel would have had to continue without the main star himself. In May 2023, Schwarzenegger previously spoke with The Hollywood Reporter and responded that while the franchise would continue, he was"done." He cited that"I got the message loud and clear that the world wants to move on with a different theme when it comes to ‘The Terminator.’ Someone has to come up with a great idea.” He also shared the sentiment that Genisys and Dark Fate were"not well written." Now, it appears that Cameron has made the creative decision to move forward without the star, wanting to take a fresh direction in the franchise's storytelling. This remains the most confirmed detail in the Terminator 7 development. Plot details remain under wraps as the director has been actively working on the movie's script, having expressed that he was still trying to crack the code on its narration. While Cameron didn't elaborate much more on the seventh movie, he remains one of the busiest directors even at the age of 71. He has been very focused on the Avatar franchise for over a decade, with Fire and Ash set to release on December 19, while there are plans for a fourth and fifth installment. On the other hand, the director is also working on an adaptation of Charles Pellegrino's book Ghosts of Hiroshima. However, he shared in the recent interview that he has yet to start on the script. Nevertheless, it's clear that Terminator 7 is still in active development, but there has yet to be a plan for its filming and release. Still, it's reassuring that Cameron wants to mark his decades-long return to the franchise, and it will require some patience in the meantime.
