Nesta Leeloo, a Jamaican-born retired seamstress living in Tamarac, celebrated her 108th birthday on January 6th. Affectionately known as “Mama” by her loved ones, Leeloo is just six years away from becoming the oldest living woman in the United States. Leeloo shared her secrets to a long and fulfilling life with a local news outlet. “Be decent,” she advised. “Don’t do things that your parents don’t want you to do, because they want you to be a lady or a gentleman whoever you are.
”Born in Mandeville, Jamaica, Leeloo is one of twelve children. She later moved to Kingston, where she married before immigrating to the U.S. Leeloo has a large family, including six children, 19 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, 23 great-great grandchildren, and five great-great-great grandchildren. Her family, who celebrated her milestone birthday in a video shared by NBC 6, told the outlet that “everyday with her is a gift.” Last year, during her 107th birthday celebration, Tamarac Mayor Michelle J. Gomez officially declared January 6th as “Nesta Leeloo Day.
