Jake Johnson has “no idea” if MinxOnMax is a hit—but he has a lot of love for its many nuances and surprising connection to his childhood.
), makeup artist turned photographer Richie , and even Joyce’s unfulfilled housewife sister, Shelly , Doug and Joyce make over her preachy publication,“Smut is such a splashy thing, but Doug is just a business person,” Johnson says. He andagreed early on that twice-divorced Doug wouldn’t be a pervert living out his fantasy of being around nudity. “If Bottom Dollar collapses, he’ll be selling vacuums out of the trunk of his car,” he says of the man who drives a Lincoln and lives in the suburbs.
Though the season eventually reveals a past and potentially future romantic entanglement between Doug and Tina, his relationship with his protégé, Joyce, remains strictly business. Johnson, a married father of young twin girls, says he has friendships and work relationships with women, “and there’s no sexual tension at all. It’s about the job, or it’s about the friendship…. I like that what Doug sees in Joyce is her brains”—and a way to gain legitimacy, and make more money.
Another clue to Doug’s character came about serendipitously—and resonated with Johnson personally. Near the end of the season, Joyce arrives at Doug’s house to confront him over a lewd Christmas cover forInside Chez Renetti there’s an uncaged cockatoo, the result of Johnson’s request for Rapoport to include more detail about Doug’s home life. When she suggested a cockatoo, he couldn’t help but laugh because his father had one when he was a kid—and it also flew free.
When it’s suggested he should next ask for a story line between Doug and Shelly since Parham is such a delight, he instantly agrees, saying he’s known her “forever,” and admires that she took what could have been an incidental role, and quickly made it more—which the writers noticed. “All of a sudden, she’s working at Bottom Dollar, and then she’s quickly becoming a really central character”—who has an affair with Bambi.
The season finale sees both of Doug’s work wives uncoupling from him: Tina gets into business school, and Doug gives Joyce the wildly successfuloutright. Johnson doesn’t know what the writers have in mind for a possible season two, but thinks Tina might use her acceptance as leverage because Doug takes her for granted. She needs more authority, or she’ll find it elsewhere, he says. But why would Mr. Capitalism give Joyce his cash cow,? “I think he knows that he can’t do it without her.
