The whirlwind pro sports career of Tim Tebow has likely come to an end
The whirlwind pro sports career of Tim Tebow has likely come to an end, after the Jacksonville Jaguars released the former Heisman Trophy winner turned pop culture icon Tuesday morning, dashing hopes of an improbable career comeback for Tebow nearly a decade since he last appeared in an NFL game.
... [+] game against the Hawaii Warriors on Aug. 30, 2008 at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville, Florida. Tebow confirmed his departure from the Jaguars on Twitter, saying,"I’ve never wanted to make decisions out of fear of failure and I’m grateful for the chance to have pursued a dream." Tebow, 33, signed a contract with the Jaguars in May in the hopes of making the team as a tight end, which was largely viewed as an, given Tebow had played as a quarterback throughout the rest of his football career. Tebow did appear in the Jaguars' first preseason game on Saturday, a 23-13 loss to the Cleveland Browns, where he put on a poor showing."Thank you to the @Jaguars organization and everyone who has supported me in this journey," Tebow tweeted, before quoting the Bible."And we know that…God works all things together for good. Romans 8:28."At the age of 33, getting released almost certainly marks the end of Tebow's sports playing career. He entered the NFL as a first round draft pick by the Denver Broncos in 2010, following a college career at the University of Florida that had already made Tebow something of a pop culture icon. He was especially known for outward displays of his Christian faith at Florida, kneeling in prayer before games and wearing eye black with Bible references written on them, which was later banned from college football. His vocal leadership of highly successful Florida teams also lent itself to extensive media coverage, with Tebow helping Florida win national championships in the 2006 and 2008 seasons, while he took home the Heisman Trophy as college football's best player for the 2007 season. But Tebow was largely unable to find success at the pro level. He was traded away from the Broncos after the 2011 season, even though he led the team to a dramatic overtime playoff win against the Pittsburgh Steelers—widely regarded as the pinnacle of Tebow's time in the NFL. Tebow would never be a regular starting quarterback in the NFL again, making his last regular season appearance with the New York Jets in the 2012 season. After attempting NFL comebacks in 2013 and 2015, Tebow moved on from football to try, signing for the New York Mets organization in 2016. He spent more than four years in the Mets minor league ranks, but never appeared for the major league team. Tebow has also spent time as a film producer and sports broadcaster during the past several years.Tebow's head coach during his playing days at Florida, Urban Meyer, is in his first season as the head coach of the Jaguars. The connection between Meyer and Tebow was seen as a major contributor to the team taking a chance on Tebow in the first place. Tebow's attempted move to tight end came because there was no space for him to play as a quarterback on the team—the Jaguars drafted quarterback Trevor Lawrence with the No. 1 overall pick in this year's draft.
