Jadeveon Clowney’s mind is willing but he’s not sure that he’ll be able to join his good friend Myles Garrett Sunday against the Chargers and their top-ranked pass offense.
BEREA, Ohio —
One of the best edge defenders — and edge-setters — in the NFL, Clowney, 29, struggled to watch the Browns collapse in the second half of Sunday’s 23-20 loss to the Falcons. The defense gave up 172 yards rushing and a 42-yard pass. Clowney was one of three starting defensive linemen to miss the game, along with Garrett and defensive tackle Taven Bryan .
“I want to get after every quarterback, nothing special for him, but one of the best quarterbacks in our league,” he said. “Of course you want to go out there and help your team win and this is a big game on our side and we need this win, we need all these wins, so I wish I could get out there and help my teammates and contribute.”
He’s learned over the years that rushing back from injury is counterproductive. He tried to do so after his rookie season, when he suffered a torn right meniscus in his knee and ultimately had to undergo microfracture surgery, which involves drilling holes in the knee to spur the growth of a cartilage-like substance.
“I heard that so many times and I went out there and I felt like I hurt myself more than helped the team at that time,” he said. “I just want this time to be a little different than that. I just want to get healthy so I can get back out there and do the same thing I was doing before I left the field.”
While he was busy rehabbing last Monday, he was shocked to discover that Garrett, one of his best friends on the team, flipped his Porsche several times and probably only survived because he was wearing his seatbelt.
