Jaden Smith speaks out in the wake of the Will Smith Oscars slap controversy 👀 'And That's How We Do It.' 😳
Jaden Smith voices support for his father, Will Smith, after the actor slapped presenter Chris Rock during the 2022 Academy Awards. This year's Oscars ceremony was certainly a big night for the elder Smith, in more ways than one.
As expected, Smith took home the Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Richard Williams, father of tennis stars Venus and Serena, in the movie King Richard. This was a big win for the actor, as his third Academy Award nomination became his first ever victory. However, as many likely know, being honored with an Oscar is not the only reason his 2022 Oscars appearance will be remembered. Earlier in the ceremony, comedian and presenter Rock made a joke referring the shaved head of Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, noting that she was ready to star in a sequel to 1997's G.I. Jane. However, Pinkett Smith has been open for several years about how she struggles with alopecia, a condition which causes hair loss. Approaching the stage after clearly not taking kindly the remark, Smith slapped Rock across the face, then return to his seat and chastised the comedian for mocking his wife.In a recent tweet, Smith's son Jaden voices his support for his father's actions. His tweet is simple and to the the point, stating, "And That's How We Do It." While the message itself is somewhat ambiguous, it is hard to imagine the statement could be referring to anything other than support for his father, who not only stood up for Jaden's mother, but then went on to promptly win an Academy Award. See his full tweet below:The responses to both Smith's behavior and Jaden's tweet have been mixed. Many are in agreement that Rock's Pinkett Smith joke was completely inappropriate, with several viewers pointing out that Rock also made jokes at her expense the last time he hosted the Academy Awards. Despite this, others have stated that, while Smith had every right to be angry, a public display of violence, especially during one of the year's biggest live TV events, was not a justifiable response. It can't be denied that Rock's joke was completely uncalled for, and it is certainly understandable why Jaden stands with his father. A joke at the expense of someone's disease is never alright, especially when it is said in front of as many people as were tuned in to the 2022 Academy Awards. However, Smith's Oscars slap was unacceptable, and while he seems to have avoided any legal action, there will surely be many who question the producers' decision to continue with his involvement in the ceremony as if the incident never occurred.
