Jacob Rees-Mogg has lost his seat as the Conservative Party endured a woeful night in the general election .
Mr Rees-Mogg lost his North East Somerset and Hanham seat to Labour with Dan Norris elected as its new MP. Former cabinet member Mr Rees-Mogg had been in parliament since 2010 representing North East Somerset. A controversial figure known for his hard-line right-wing views and social conservatism, the 55-year-old attended Eton and Trinity College, Oxford, before working in finance. He won around 15,3442 votes in Thursday's vote but was beaten by Labour's candidate with more than 20,000 votes. It was described as a Portillo moment.READ MORE: General election 2024 live
Mr Rees-Mogg's defeat came as the Conservative Party suffered losses across the country. Sir Keir Starmer's Labour Party won the election just before 5am on Friday, passing the 326 seat mark required for a majority. The exit poll predicted that Labour would win 410 seats to the Conservatives' 131, returning Labour to Downing Street.
