The two-time Cy Young award winner revealed his goal for the 2025 season Saturday at Globe Life Field.

Texas Rangers starting pitcher Jacob deGrom throws during the first inning of a baseball game against the Los Angeles Angels, Friday, Sept. 27, 2024, in Anaheim, Calif.hair shagged out the back of his trucker cap and curled upward just below his ears.

He insisted, on Saturday at Globe Life Field, that it won’t get any longer.“At this point, what can you do?” he said. “Go out there and throw. Take the ball as many times as I can and just go out there and throw.” The two-time Cy Young award winner is in the midst of his first “normal offseason” since he signed with theHe was a first-time free agent the year prior and signed a five-year contract with Texas after nine with the Mets. Even the one before that — his last full winter in New York — followed a 2021 season that was derailed in July by season-ending right forearm tightness.DeGrom has spent this winter healthy and with an unfamiliar peace of mind. The 36-year-old returned to the major leagues at the tail end of last season, started three games for the Rangers after a 16-month layoff and checked off a number of physical and mental boxes before the offseason. “It’s still a thought in the back of your mind,” deGrom said. “You just came back from a major surgery. You probably won’t get another one at my age. It was, ‘Hey, is everything good?’” He pitched a combined 10 2/3 innings and yielded a 1.69 ERA in three starts against the Seattle Mariners and the Los Angeles Angels last September and ended his abbreviated regular season with a clean bill of health.DeGrom has thrown off the mound once this offseason and plans to for a second time on Sunday or Monday. He traditionally doesn’t touch a mound until Feb. 1 but hopes to strike a slower buildup toward spring training and the regular season. He’s yet to discuss his workload with the Rangers’ brass but he understands that he can’t just “jump to 200-something innings.” He hasn’t thrown more than 92 innings or made more than 15 starts in the last six seasons. “But I’d like to be able to go out there and make 30 ,” deGrom said. “That’s the goal. You sign here to pitch and I haven’t been able to do that. The goal is to go out there and make as many starts as I can to help contribute.”Texas Rangers’ Chris Young has no qualms over Rōki Sasaki’s Los Angeles Dodgers decisionTexas Rangers top prospect Sebastian Walcott eyeing Wyatt Langford as ‘motivational’ modelShawn covers the Texas Rangers and other Dallas-area sports for The News.
