DeGrom increased his velocity in his first start at Globe Life Field since undergoing Tommy John surgery last season.
Texas Rangers starting pitcher Jacob deGrom delivers in the first inning of a baseball game against the Seattle Mariners, Friday, Sept. 20, 2024, in Arlington, Texas. The two-time Cy Young award winner allowed one run on five hits in three innings vs. the Seattle Mariners on Friday in his first start at Globe Life Field since April 28, 2023. He threw 58 pitches, increased his fastball velocity to 97.6 mph and used all four of his pitches.
DeGrom threw 28 fastballs, 23 sliders, four changeups and three curveballs. The Mariners whiffed on nine of his pitches: four on the fastball, three on the slider and two on the changeup.“I was able to throw all four pitches and felt good with them,” said deGrom, who was pleased with the progress he made with his slider. “That was a huge plus.”The 36-year-old has allowed one run on seven hits in 6 and 2/3 combined innings this season with nine strikeouts to one walk.
“Tonight I wanted to at least get four or five innings, but three 20-pitch innings isn’t ideal,” deGrom said. “Try to be a little more efficient, try to go out there for a fifth up would be the goal.”— in his second relief appearance since he was shifted from the starting rotation into the bullpen — relieved deGrom in the fourth inning and, after a perfect first frame, allowed seven earned runs on six hits and two walks over his next four.
