A routine traffic stop in Jacksonville, Florida, took a tragic turn when an officer accidentally discharged her weapon, striking the driver in the leg. The officer involved was subsequently fired, and the department implemented new policies regarding firearm removal during stops.

Sometimes, routine traffic stop s take a turn for the bizarre and occasionally, the downright dangerous. This was the case in Jacksonville , Florida, when a seemingly ordinary stop for a suspected red light violation turned into a shocking incident involving an accidental gunshot. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office pulled over Jason Arrington for allegedly running a red light on December 13th. Officer S. Lowry, who made the initial stop, noticed that the steering column in Mr.

Arrington's GMC Yukon was severely damaged. Coupled with Mr. Arrington's disclosure that he was carrying a firearm, Officer Lowry decided to have Mr. Arrington exit his vehicle so officers could secure his weapon. Mr. Arrington cooperated fully with the officers. However, things took a dangerous turn when Officer M. Cardwell attempted to remove the firearm from Mr. Arrington's waist. The weapon, while securely holstered, was difficult to remove. In an unfortunate turn of events, as Officer Cardwell tugged on the gun a second time, her fingers accidentally contacted the trigger, causing the firearm to discharge. The bullet struck Mr. Arrington in the leg. The officers acted swiftly, applying a tourniquet, locating the entry wound, and doing everything possible to control the bleeding until Emergency Medical Services arrived. While Mr. Arrington's injuries were treated, the repercussions from the incident were far from over. An internal affairs investigation was launched, concluding that Officer Cardwell was guilty of incompetence due to her actions. Consequently, she was dismissed from the department. In response to the incident, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office implemented a new policy: officers will no longer remove firearms from individuals who are lawfully carrying unless there is a specific, articulable suspicion of danger. Mr. Arrington, however, is not letting the matter rest. He has filed a lawsuit against the department, adding further legal complexities to an already distressing situation
