Jacksonville is facing high fire danger and extreme drought as winds pick up and rainfall stays low, according to Meteorologist Katie Garner. See what to expect for temperatures and outdoor plans in the days ahead.
Strong winds and a lack of rain heat up risks– If you’ve been noticing things drying out around Jacksonville, you’re not alone. We’re under an extreme drought right now, and that’s making fire danger a big deal.
Today on The Weather Authority, I showed you just how serious things are—wind gusts have reached up into the 30s, and at one point even near 40, before easing a little this afternoon. We’ve had cooler air filter in after a cold front, but that hasn’t brought nearly enough rain to help out. Our drought monitor on Exact Track 4D is showing that just about any bit of moisture is desperately needed. If you smoke or do any outdoor work, just a reminder to be extra careful. Even parking on dry grass can start a fire with these conditions.Right now, temperatures have finally made it to 70 in Jacksonville, and along the coast we’ve been ranging from the 60s to low 70s. After the front passed, it’s definitely felt nice—perfect for a walk or some time outside, even if it’s not quite warm enough for full-blown summer gear. Today, there’s about a 30 percent chance of rain, but showers are expected to be light. It’s not the kind of rain you need to plan around or write home about. Honestly, I wish we were tracking a real soaker, but we’ll take what we can get. Wind speeds are sticking in the teens, but those higher gusts are what keep that fire risk in the spotlight. Looking ahead, temperatures are forecast to go back into the 80s starting tomorrow—so if you’ve got a convertible you might be able to get some use out of it soon! For your weekend plans, here’s some good news: beautiful weather is in the forecast. Our highs will stay in the 70s for Saturday and Sunday, with very low rain chances—nothing higher than 10 percent. That means you can get outside, enjoy the sun, and not have to worry about rain canceling any big events. Overnight tonight, we’re expecting it to be mostly clear, cooling down to around 61. Daytime highs will climb back up as we roll into next week, likely hitting the 80s again.
