We chat with TheSantaClauses EPs Jack and Jason Winer about the making of the new disneyplus series, how it deals with Scott Calvin's legacy, and some of the larger holiday season themes:
Scott Calvin's time as Santa Claus has brought much joy to the world, but the time has come to finally pass on his mantle in the Disney+ mini-series The Santa Clauses. With its first two episodes hitting Disney+ on November 16th, The Santa Clauses brings both new and old characters into the timeless tale. Executive producers Jason Winer and Jack Winer guide the series as the newest installment of The Santa Clause tale.
EPs on The Santa Clauses Screen Rant: In overseeing The Santa Clauses, how did the idea behind a miniseries focusing on Scott retiring from being Santa come about? Jason Winer: Yeah, it’s been 16 years since the final movie, which ends with the birth of the child. That child is now 16 years old, and you know, we discover that Scott and Carol have another child, a younger daughter. So, it’s a the four of them, they’re a family unit now living at the North Pole, and that’s what so cool about this. It’s the combination of it being a family comedy and a big Christmas adventure, and you find out in the format, too.
Jason Winer: I think it’s connecting this awesome franchise and character journey to what’s happening in the world around us right now. Consumerism is at an all-time high, there’s a spirit of ‘What can I get?’ rather than ‘What can I give?’, and all of that and that feeling that we’re disconnected a little bit from each other, that’s all affecting Santa’s magic.
