Special counsel Smith could write a final report on the president-elect's election-fraud case, an expert told Newsweek.
Jack Smith could write a damning report about Donald Trump's election-fraud case before resigning, a former federal prosecutor has said.Sahar Abi-Hassan, assistant political science professor at Northeastern University in Oakland, California, told Newsweek that Special Counsel Smith will likely write a final report and resign.Trump was indicted on four counts of allegedly working to illegally interfere in the results of the 2020 election in the run-up to the January 6, 2021 riot at the U.S.
Under Department of Justice rules, sitting presidents cannot be prosecuted, which would push the case back to 2029.However, Trump has already vowed to have Smith immediately fired as soon as the Republican takes office in January 2025.Joyce Vance, a frequent Trump critic, wrote on her Civil Discourse legal blog on Wednesday that Smith's report could leave a permanent record of Trump's attempt to overturn the result of the 2020 election.
