Discovering Major League caliber talent among a sea of youth baseball players has long been one of the sport’s great challenges. The process by which scouts and organizations weed out the greats from the not-so-greats has continued to evolve but. Flaherty expressed his belief that there’s a skill to recognizing a player’s feel for the game and that skill has been replaced by pure data analysis.
Flaherty also voiced his displeasure over the increasing trend of young athletes concentrating on a single sport as opposed to developing a wider array of athletic skills. “We were playing travel , Flaherty said.” “But when it was fall and wintertime, we were playing basketball, we were playing football, volleyball, whatever it was, and that’s just how we did it.”
