The premier slammed the “sexualised imagery” but we should remain wary of those in power attempting to deflect criticism.

“We often leave them there for a while because we want to remind ourselves and our friends of that kernel of truth and spark discussion around it,” Kirner wrote.

It’s been a little over 30 years since Kirner led the state, and just one month since Victoria’s second female premier Jacinta Allan moved into the big office on Treasury Place. But the debate about the depiction of female politicians is hotter than ever.Allan, as is her right, slammed the cartoon, branding it “sexualised” and found support among other current and former politicians.

Perhaps it’s an outdated or poorly understood fable, but it’s long been used, along with others such as The Boy Who Cried Wolf and King Midas, to offer a pointed critique of our political elite., once observed when asked about the tricky business of drawing women, females are perhaps more sensitive when it comes to being caricatured.

But Allan has every right to be angry and doesn’t need to grow a “thicker skin” as some talkback callers and letter writers suggested. If she’s mad, she should let us know. For too long women have been forced to stay quiet in the face of perceived sexism
