Ja Morant will miss at least the next two Memphis Grizzlies games, the team announced on Saturday, while the NBA investigates an Instagram Live video posted from Morant’s account early Saturday morning in which he momentarily posed with what appeared to be a handgun.
“I take full responsibility for my actions last night,” Morant said in a statement. “I’m sorry to my family, teammates, coaches, fans, partners, the city of Memphis and the entire Grizzlies organization for letting you down. I’m going to take some time away to get help and work on learning better methods of dealing with stress and my overall well-being.”
Following a late-January game against the Indiana Pacers, the Athletic reported that Morant had a confrontation with members of the Pacers’ traveling party. Later that night, someone in a vehicle that Morant was riding in shined a red laser pointer on them. No suspensions came from that event, and Bass said that the league couldn’t confirm that anyone was threatened with a weapon.
The Pacers incident came only days after another one, in which Morant, his teammates and his father, Tee Morant, confronted former NFL star and FOX Sports personality Shannon Sharpe at a game in Los Angeles against the Lakers. Trash talk between Sharpe and the Grizzlies escalated to the point that security guards rushed to get between the team and the courtside seats.
