J.J. Watt, the best defensive player in Texans history and one of the NFL's all-time greats, announced he is retiring.
the best defensive player in Texans historyWatt, who played 10 seasons in Houston before signing with Arizona as a free agent in 2021, was a three-time NFL defensive player of the year and a five-time All-Pro selection.
He was drafted in the first round by the Texans in 2011 and was named the Walter Payton Man of the Year in 2017. As the Texans began their rebuilding, team chairman and CEO Cal McNair granted Watt his release to sign with a contender.Watt played just seven games with one sack for the Cardinals in 2021 because of injuries. He has 9.5 sacks this season in 14 games.
For the Texans, he was at his best from 2012 through 2015 when he averaged over 17 sacks a season and was named NFL's top defensive player three times. Injuries limited him to eight games the next two seasons but in 2018 he had 16 sacks and was second in comeback player of the year voting.
