The government shutdown has sparked intense political battles, with both parties blaming each other.

m. Sunday at Pete Mathews Coliseum with one-hour visitation and graveside at Anniston Memorial Gardens. Anniston — J.D. Hess, a 28-year Calhoun County commissioner, died Tuesday afternoon of natural causes, according to his daughter, Jessica Cobb. She shared that the family will greet friends at 2 p.m. Sunday with a “celebration of life” service at 3 p.m., both at Pete Mathews Coliseum. A graveside will follow at Anniston Memorial Gardens.“He battled cancer and proved what a fighter he was,” Cobb said. “Everyone knew about him publicly, but in the home, he was the most loving and genuine man, father, grandfather and husband. What you saw out in public was even better at home. He took such good care of us and he was willing to help anyone who was willing to help themselves.Commissioner Carolyn Henderson said she cried all afternoon on Tuesday after learning of Hess’ death. “J.D. was a good friend and the one who came and talked to Eli about running for a seat on the commission. When Eli passed, and I took his place, J.D. was my mentor. When I took the office, he did everything he could to help me.”“He wanted to see our county be the best it could be,” Patterson said. “Our county is in good shape because of people like Hess and the vision he had.” Hess was the longest-serving commissioner in the county’s history, according to an Anniston Star article, serving District 4. He lost reelection to the commission in 2022. After the loss, he said: “The sun comes up in the morning. I’ve got my family who are so special to me,” according to an Anniston Star article. Patterson said Hess helped him learn the ropes when he was elected to the office, calling him a mentor and father-like figure. “One of his favorite sayings was ‘least said, best said. In other words, he told me not to be running my mouth,” he said. Patterson praised Hess’s vision for the horse trails at McClellan and for his vision for obtaining a place at McClellan to store the county highway department’s equipment. “We are probably in the top tier of the counties in Alabama with our equipment and the highway office’s complex,” Patterson added. “Also, he loved that young people now have a place to have their shows related to livestocks and anything related to agriculture. The Agricultural Center on the Bynum-Leatherwood was another vision he had.” Alabama State Sen. Keith Kelley, R-Weaver, was elected in 2022, and although their service to Calhoun County didn’t overlap, Hess was still of great help to Kelley. “I talked to him about things related to the commission that had happened,” Kelley said, “and talked a good bit about the background on a lot of decisions made in years past.” Kelly said having Hess as a resource on roads, ballfields and a number of things he, as a new senator, needed to understand. “He was a wealth of information, and we are better off for having him serve for as long as he did. He was a great asset to our community.” Be the first to know Get local news delivered to your inbox!
