IXPE Space Observatory Collects Its First Imaging Data astronomy space science
This IXPE image maps the intensity of X-rays coming from Cassiopeia A; colors ranging from cool purple and blue to red and hot white correspond with the increasing brightness of the X-rays; the image was created using X-ray data collected by IXPE between January 11 and 18, 2022. “IXPE represents another extraordinary first,” said Dr. Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for the Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters. On January 11, 2022, IXPE focused its X-ray eyes on Cassiopeia A, a remnant that blew up as a supernova more than 11,000 years ago. “The IXPE image of Cassiopeia A is as historic as the Chandra image of the same supernova remnant,” said IXPE principal investigator Dr. Martin Weisskopf, a researcher at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center.
