My Future My Clutter
picks up the threads, as we learn that he and his partner split soon after the birth of their daughter, posing an interesting co-parenting challenge when Covid arrived. Between glimpses into Graham’s personal pandemic experience, he dips into politics, Peppa Pig, and harks back to his days at Eton, as he attempts to leave the past behind and focus on the future.
Graham’s trademark style is verbose, slightly bumbling, just shy of an upper-class caricature. He treads the line between self-deprecation and pride, more often falling on the former side – “I’m hearing sarcasm in every whoop,” he tells us. He pokes fun at his own privilege, his attempts to escape it creating a duality perfectly captured by an anecdote from the day of Boris Johnson’s resignation when Graham was both “pumping out anti-establishment tweets” and consoling a Conservative friend.
Nostalgia is a running theme. We learn of Graham’s “Feelings Box”, a capsule for items that can transport him to the past. When the first lockdown was announced, he moved to his parent’s house in Wiltshire, taking his ex and baby daughter with him. Here, his childhood bedroom felt like “one big feelings box”. He introduces a lovely device – little Ivo’s boarding school notebooks containing short stories revealing his poorly concealed loneliness.
