In a lengthy statement, Gov. Ivey said that the state would commit $40 million for capital expenses at Jackson Hospital.

) - Gov. Kay Ivey Tuesday joined Montgomery County, along with a growing number of government agencies, to pledge financial support for Jackson Hospital in an ongoing effort to prevent a decline in health care availability in the region.

Tuesday and joined the group in authorizing future bonds to support the hospital as it continues working to keep its doors open. In a lengthy statement, Gov. Ivey said that the state would commit $40 million for capital expenses at Jackson Hospital, and that the funds would only be available once the hospital emerges out of Bankruptcy. “For Alabama to be the best state in which to live, work and raise a family, it is imperative we support creating opportunities – from the classroom to the workforce – for every citizen across the state. No doubt, we have a strong record when it comes to economic development, but for that to continue, we must also press forward in finding solutions to our healthcare challenges. Right now in Montgomery, our healthcare system faces its own unique struggles with the current situation at Jackson Hospital. Losing a hospital in one of our large metropolitan areas would be devasting not just for the Montgomery community, but for the many residents in the surrounding counties it serves. For safety and security in our Capital City, it is important we maintain Jackson Hospital as a close by option for state government, elected leaders in the executive, legislative and judicial branches, as well as the many visitors, from our fourth graders to our tourists. And even more than that, it serves so many other Alabamians nearby, in both urban and rural areas. For a year now, I have been engaged on the issues facing Jackson Hospital due to their previous mismanagement. There is new hospital leadership in place now, which I have confidence in, and I challenged local elected leaders to come forward with their own funding commitments. I am grateful to both the City Council and County Commission for answering that call. I am also proud to commit $40 million from the state for capital expenses at Jackson Hospital. These future funds would only be issued once Jackson Hospital emerges out of bankruptcy. A strong capital city is necessary for a strong state, and the healthcare system here in Montgomery is certainly a critical component to that. I remain hopeful Jackson Hospital puts itself on a stronger path and is sustainable through its next 80 years and beyond."“Governor Ivey’s support assures continued access to quality healthcare in our Capital City and the Alabama River Region,” said John Quinlivan, Chief Executive Officer of Jackson Hospital. “We are grateful for her confidence in our new leadership team and her support for our plan to save Jackson Hospital.” Montgomery County Commissioners met on the morning of Feb. 10 to go over what Chairman Doug Singleton, called the “final steps” before writing a check for Jackson Hospital. The commission committed a total of $17.5 million towards the hospital, with the first $10 million payment expected soon. “The funding should be available this week to them , so they can start using that to continue the operations of that hospital, as they continue to make improvements there and invest back into the hospital. There’s a lot of infrastructure projects they have to do, but they also have to pay their bills,” said Chairman of the Montgomery County Commission, Doug Singleton. Singleton says the money will help the hospital emerge from bankruptcy, so it can focus on operational and infrastructure costs while ensuring adequate health care options remain available for patients. “They have been open and transparent on how the money will be spent,” said Singleton. “They have shared with us how they intend to use the money, the operations cost and the infrastructure cost that they have to fix right now. So, we will continue to work with them and meet with them and do quarterly reviews to make sure that the taxpayer dollars are being utilized in the best possible way.” After the original $10 million payment, the county will pay the remaining $7.5 million in $2.5 million installments through 2029. The money will come from the county’s general fund budget.ALEA launches child exploitation investigation involving police officer, assistant coach in Pickens CountyAuthorities: Suspect in Theodore family abduction has gang ties and violent criminal history in El Salvador, was never deported
