Gov. Kay Ivey has removed a member from the Alabama State Board of Veterans Affairs and, in a letter released Thursday, asked for the resignation of the commissioner of the state’s Department of Veterans Affairs.

Ivey’s decision to remove John Kilpatrick from the board was effective immediately, her office said. The letter to State Serviceasks for his resignation by 5 p.m. Thursday, noting that if he steps down, she will make the resignation effective as of Sept. 30. Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey has removed a member for the state's Board of Veterans' Affairs and is demanding the resignation of the state's Veterans Affairs commissioner.“Ample cause exists for your removal as Commissioner,” Ivey said in her letter. “For example, your agency mishandled an ARPA grant program by, among other things, proposing - on a substantially delayed basis - uses of grant funds that would be ineligible under U.S. Treasury rules and regulations and/or state law or policy.
The governor said the actions “put in jeopardy the State of Alabama’s ability to fulfill its obligations under ARPA and your agency’s ability to most effectively serve veterans.” She added that “other basis for your removal may also exist,” and said she would “specifically reserve the right to argue that you failed to consult with the Office of the Governor as required by
Ivey said she believed a leadership change was needed “to make progress in serving Alabama veterans.”
