Indiana's disappeared defense has become a defining characteristic of the season. Sunday got ugly quickly against Northwestern.
BLOOMINGTON – Perhaps the worst defensive collapse in a season increasingly weighed down by them handed the Hoosiers their first home loss of the season Sunday, 84-83 against Northwestern. Here are three reasons:Indiana’s disappeared defense has become a defining characteristic of the season. Sunday got ugly quickly.
A bet on Indiana as a conference contender was a bet that the Hoosiers could still be roughly as good as they were last winter, when they finished league play with the best adjusted defensive efficiency in the Big Ten in conference games. They’re miles away from that kind of performance — and those lofty preseason ambitions — right now.No teammates are feeling those injury absences more pointedly than Trayce Jackson-Davis and Jalen Hood-Schifino.
But without Johnson and Thompson, the Hoosiers couldn’t find consistent offense elsewhere. Tamar Bates, Malik Reneau and others chipped in, but not nearly enough to account for glaring defensive failings. The final ingredient Sunday was sloppiness. Northwestern turned 16 Indiana turnovers into 25 points. The difference in defensive failings was made plain by the Wildcats’ plus-19 advantage in points off turnovers.
This was the final obstacle stopping the comeback that never came, as the Hoosiers sank to 1-3 in a conference they once believed they could win.NORTHWESTERN
