The site will include a Sydney Metro station, along with apartments and a park.Langham acquired the former Observatory Hotel in that heritage area, and opened it after a $30 million renovation in 2014. It is one of the city’s most luxurious hotels. Originally envisioned as a city-changing waterfront suburb with apartments, retail and premium-grade offices, Central Barangaroo has faced significant opposition. Grocon, the development group backed by the wealthy Grollo family, collapsed, and Scentre, which operates the Westfield shopping centres in Australia, have pulled out of the project.
“We’ve engaged earnestly with the community and modified the proposal materially in response. The clarity of direction from the government over the last twelve months in particular has provided a much greater focus on the public dividend from the project,” an Aqualand spokesman said in a statement. A spokesman for NSW Lands and Property Minister Steve Kamper confirmed the latest designs had significantly reduced the project’s scale and height in response to community feedback.
