More than 1,000 new cases and three deaths have been recorded in the last 24 hours, sparking fears of a second wave.
Numbers have picked up rapidly over the last few days with 947 on Friday, 845 on Thursday and 642 on Wednesday.Officials said there were 215 daily infections in Rome alone – more than the record 208 registered in the capital on March 28.
He also warned most of the new infections were among young people who were not showing symptoms and authorities were working urgently to stop them transmitting it to older and more vulnerable family members. Italy saw the first major coronavirus outbreak in Europe and was badly affected weeks before other countries. It has recorded more than 257,000 cases, with more than 35,000 dead.
