A new agreement between Italy, Albania, and the UAE allows migrants intercepted in international waters to be processed in Albania, raising concerns about human rights and the precedent it sets.

A recent agreement between Italy , Albania , and the United Arab Emirates has sparked controversy surrounding migrant processing and asylum. The deal, finalized in November 2023, allows up to 3,000 migrants intercepted by the Italian coast guard in international waters each month to be sheltered in Albania and vetted for possible asylum in Italy or repatriation. Italy has pledged to welcome those granted asylum, while those whose applications are rejected face deportation directly from Albania .

This agreement has drawn criticism from human rights activists who argue it sets a dangerous precedent. Despite the criticism, the Italian government maintains that the deal is necessary due to the high influx of migrants arriving in the country.Italy has seen a significant rise in migrant arrivals this year, with 3,704 reaching its shores so far, more than double the number recorded in the same period last year. Last year, a total of 66,317 migrants arrived in Italy, representing a 58% drop compared to the previous year. The majority of these arrivals came from Bangladesh, followed by Syria, Tunisia, and Egypt, according to the Italian Interior Ministry. The agreement, while intended to streamline the asylum process, has raised concerns about the potential for human rights violations and the lack of adequate support for asylum seekers in Albania
