BREAKING: Italy confirms another 793 coronavirus deaths as cases surge past 50,000
Official figures show 793 people died overnight, bringing the death toll across the country to 4,825. The total number of cases has also shot up to 53,578, with 6,557 more positive tests in the same period.
Earlier this week Italy overtook China as the country to register the most deaths from the infection. Some 3,255 people have died in China since the virus first emerged there late last year. Italy’s elderly population, its overwhelmed healthcare system, and the delayed lockdown of the outbreak’s epicentre in Lombardy have all combined to exacerbate the crisis in the country.A Covid-19 patient is treated by doctors in Rome AdvertisementLombardy’s head of welfare, Giulio Gallera, said the number of cases in the region, which includes Italy’s financial capital Milan, had increased by 3,251 to 25,515.
