Grand plans for a single super-quick Italian broadband network are going nowhere fast as Prime Minister Mario Draghi is no longer pushing a marriage of superfast broadband providers. LJucca writes:
Italian Innovation Minister Vittorio Colao, a former Vodafone chief executive enlisted by Prime Minister Mario Draghi, on June 6 played down the idea of creating a single ultrafast broadband network, a project supported by previous governments. Colao said Rome should be a “coach” of operators involved in creating the network.
Utility Enel on April 30 agreed to sell its 50% stake in wholesale broadband operator Open Fiber for 2.65 billion euros, valuing the company’s equity and debt at about 7.3 billion euros. Infrastructure fund Macquarie will take 40% of the broadband operator, while state investor Cassa Depositi e Prestiti, which already owned half of the firm, will hike its stake to 60%.
Telecom Italia agreed in August to sell 37.5% of its FiberCop unit, which operates the group’s last-mile network, to KKR. The deal valued FiberCop at 7.7 billion euros including debt.Optical fiber cables for internet providers are seen running into a Enel Group server room in Perugia, Italy, June 23, 2017.
