The Italian Coast Guard rescued 22 people and recovered nine bodies after a people smugglers' boat capsized in a storm about 50 kilometers (30 miles) south of the island of Lampedusa. The survivors reported that the steel-hulled boat had departed from Sfax, Tunisia, on Sunday night and was carrying 46 people from Guinea, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Ivory Coast. The boat capsized on Wednesday morning when waves reached up to 5 meters (16 feet) high and the engine broke down, leaving the group adrift, according to the UN refugee agency. The deceased migrants included eight men and a six-month-old baby, said UNHCR. Six of the survivors received treatment for severe hypothermia and dehydration, with two of them still hospitalized.
