A disabled pensioner who “hardly goes out” because of the cost of living has said proposals to change the pensions has said the triple lock is a “fiscal risk”, due to its upward ratcheting effect – leaving the public finances exposed to ever-higher pension costs.to pay for his care, clothes and food since he retired from working for British Rail more than 20 years ago.
The consumer price index measure of inflation was 6.7 per cent for the year to September – lower than July’s earnings figure of 8.5 per cent. Dennis Reed, the director of Silver Voices – an advocacy group for senior citizens – is calling on the Government to stick to the higher pension hike. “Silver Voices members have switched off their heating because they cannot afford it, cutting down on food as much as they can and not washing their sheets, so they don’t have to use the washing machine.”
“I am sure this has forced a lot more people on to the NHS,” he said, “which is already in dire straights.
