Diesel La Torraca as young Francis Shaw in IT: Welcome to Derry
Stephen King might not be as directly involved with the creation of Andy Muschietti's IT: Welcome to Derry, but the HBO series is still a love letter to the world King created with his 1986 novel, not only by introducing us to more plots that happened in the book, but with Easter eggs and callbacks to other past King works.
This can be seen in Lilly being sent to the Juniper Hill psychiatric hospital, or the government's plan to turn the entity into a weapon reminiscent of a similar event that happened in The Mist. Episode 3,"Now You See It," offers a proper introduction to Dick Hallorann , a character who was a major part of The Shining, wth one scene revealing him looking for the underground force in his mind by touching a slingshot. That weapon might seem like an innocent prop, but previously, it was an integral part of the original IT novel and miniseries. Young Francis Shaw Is Saved With a Slingshot in 'IT: Welcome to Derry' "Now You See It" begins with a flashback to decades earlier, with a young boy, later revealed to be General Francis Shaw as a child , at a carnival in Derry. Inside the freak show and hall of mirrors exhibits, he's scared by a one-eyed old man, but when he rushes outside into the daylight, he runs into his own father. The man calls his young son a sissy for being scared, but at least he's won him something in the meantime: a slingshot. On the way home, their car breaks down, so they stop to buy water on the roadside from three Native American kids. Not having enough money to pay, Francis offers his new slingshot to a girl named Rose in trade. The two end up becoming friends, laughing and playing together, but Rose turns very serious when Francis runs into the woods. She begs him to come back, but he won't listen, and it nearly costs him his life. In the woods, the entity appears behind a tree as the old man before chasing Francis, its shape impossibly growing as it gallops on all fours. He's surely a goner, but at the last second, Rose uses the slingshot to fire a rock at its head. This hurts the creature just long enough for them to escape, since the entity can't follow beyond the treeline. Rose has saved her new friend with a simple toy, but it won't be the last time the slingshot appears in IT canon. Shaw's Slingshot Is an Important Tool for Hallorann in 'IT: Welcome to Derry' Three decades later, Rose is still living in Derry and running her own thrift shop, while Francis has left, joined the Air Force, and become a general. It's not until he comes back to Derry for a secret mission that all of his memories of the town, including Rose, return to him, but it's not her he's here for. Instead, General Shaw and the U.S. government are seeking a fear-inducing entity that lives somewhere underground in town. With the Russians and Cubans teaming up to build a weapon that can strike the United States, the Air Force wants to turn the entity into a weapon that can be used on the battlefield and bring the Cold War to a quick end. For this, Shaw needs to lean on Leroy Hanlon for help, but admits that Dick Hallorann is the one who can truly find the entity. Shaw knows about Hallorann's ability to see and feel things that others can't, so he has Hanlon take him up in a helicopter above the dig site, with Hallorann's mind guiding the way. In the chopper, Hallorann holds a cigar box containing Shaw's slingshot. When he touches it, his eyes close, his body shakes, and within seconds, his mind has been transported to the sewers, where he finds the entity, a pair of glowing eyes looking out from Pennywise the Dancing Clown's circus wagon. The significance of the slingshot is explained by Shaw in a scene just prior, when he pulls the cigar box out of a drawer in his desk. We don't see what's inside just yet, but he tells Colonel Fuller that this will be something extra to guide Hallorann,"something that put its mark on that thing a long time ago." The Losers of 'IT' Use a Slingshot To Weaken Pennywise If your only familiarity with IT is Andy Muschietti's two movies, the slingshot doesn't mean anything to you, because it's skipped over in that version. However, the simple weapon plays a major role in both Stephen King's novel and the 1990 TV miniseries. In the novel, Pennywise is hurt when the Losers' Club uses a slingshot to shoot silver dollars at it. This makes even more sense, since it's used against the monster when it takes the shape of a werewolf, with that monster long been said to be able to be killed by a silver bullet. Bev, the only girl of the group, is the true master of the slingshot as the one with the best aim, so she keeps it and is entrusted with firing at Pennywise. In the miniseries, Beverly , at the end of the plotline with the kids, takes aim at Pennywise , and lets the silver fly from her slingshot. It strikes its target on the top of his head, opening it up and releasing a bright light. She's about to shoot him again when the clown jumps into a drain and disappears. Pennywise isn't dead, but he's seriously wounded and won't be seen again for 27 years. The biggest question lingering around this weapon's appearance in IT: Welcome to Derry is whether General Shaw's slingshot is simply an Easter egg winking at the past, or if it will play a more significant part. Will it be seen again, in the hands of our new Losers, or perhaps Hallorann or Shaw, as the town of Derry fights back against the risen enemy? Only time will tell what happens, but Muschietti uses the episode to correct a detail that he left out of his IT movies.Powered by Expand Collapse
