Lucy Powell wants to see MPs suspended from the Parliamentary Estate upon arrest for violent or sex-related crimes rather than after being charged
Labour shadow cabinet member say she will take Tory defector Natalie Elphicke at her word “for now” Receiving a letter from the University of Oxford confirming your place would, for most, be one of the most joyous moments in a young person’s life.“When I got the offer letter, I cried because I knew I was going to have to go and I didn’t want to,” says the Shadow Leader of the House of Commons.
“Harry Potter had not been written then, but it was like Hogwarts,” she adds. “Everyone else there was like ‘I’ve got an internship lined up at the FT” or ‘I’ve got an internship lined up at my father’s law firm’. “I was just of that era,” she says. Not as straight forward an answer as Michael Gove’s admission of that he wishes he had not taken cocaine when he was a young journalist, but straight enough.
On Tuesday, Powell is making a speech on how Labour would shake up how Parliament works and is expected to reveal how, in government, the party would improve the general level of debate, diversity and discipline in the Commons. “We’ve got a motion coming to the House to change that, and that motion will propose is that suspension kicks in if someone is charged for a serious sexual or violent offence.
“To walk away from all your friends and colleagues and get all the grief you’re gonna get for crossing the floor of the House in that way takes a huge amount of courage. Like many of her front bench colleagues, Powell was not aware of Sir Keir Starmer move to welcome former Conservative MP Natalie Elphicke to Labour benches until just before the defection happened at Prime Minister’s Question’s last week
These are to boost housebuilding and restore economic stability, launching the publicly-owned Great British Energy to invest in clean energy to provide the UK with energy security, paying doctors and nurse overtime to help reduce NHS waiting lists, putting 13,000 more neighbourhood police offices on the streets, and introducing free school breakfast clubs and more high quality teaching with more specialist maths and science teachers.
