Dr Nott described distressing scenes from the war zone

A British doctor has shared a harrowing account from his visit to Gaza earlier this year. Dr David Nott, who went to the Palestinian territory in January, described scenes of utter despair at an event organised by Manchester charity Action for Humanity this week.

Dr Nott, who returned from the region which has been ravaged by war for five months to the UK in February, spoke of severe injuries and diseases left untreated. The Israeli assault started after Hamas, which controls Gaza, killed more than 1,000 people on October 7.Hamas, which is considered a terrorist group by the UK and other Western government, also abducted hundreds of civilians with many Israeli hostages still believed to be alive and being held in Gaza.

Dr Nott described the unimaginable circumstances facing the injured and unwell in Gaza. The Manchester university graduate said that the hospitals in Rafah - a city on the Egyptian border, where more than 1.6m were living at this time - were 'jam packed with patients'. During his month-long mission, the neighbouring city Khan Youins was 'being bombed' with 'drones flying above'. He said that people who were wounded in Khan Younis could not be transferred to the hospital in Rafah which meant those who could have made it died.
