The Tom Harvey Memorial Butterfly Garden was installed last year, and it is already creating a, a peaceful refuge for visitors, and a tribute to the memory of a loved one.
Even in a small village, government projects do not happen overnight or in a silo, and the garden project was no different. Judy put together a committee of neighbors and friends, and they met at the park to discuss design ideas.The design had to address several issues, starting with drainage, because the park is located in an old farm field. A nearby rain garden installed by the Chagrin River Watershed Partners helps with that problem, and also attracts more wildlife.
Koons, for his part, says “It’s one of those projects that went well. Judy is a good communicator, and when there was a difference in opinion, she could work it out.” As with all gardens, installing it is just the beginning, and Judy’s goal is to assure the long-term maintenance with a standing committee or group that oversees the care of the butterfly garden. One source of labor is high school students who need service hours. Last fall, for example, a dozen kids and a few teachers weeded and edged both the new and old butterfly gardens. As the plants fill in, they will be divided to rejuvenate the old butterfly garden.
