It's your last chance to see Battleship Texas while docked at San Jacinto State Park
's Galveston shipyard in late June for a myriad of repairs. And while the foundation is hoping to create a way for residents to see the former battleship and current museum while dry docked in Galveston, that won't be available for at least few years, said Bruce Bramlett, COO of the Battleship Texas Foundation.
The Chronicle previously reported that the battleship opened for the last time in December, but Bramlett said this weekend will be its final public showing while docked in. The museum will be open to the public from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday as part of the Battleship Texas Birthday Tour, which celebrates the ship's 108 years of existence.
"I can tell you this will be it for us," Bramlett said."After this weekend, we will not open it to the public again until after the work is done. And we're looking probably at 2024 before we get back open again." The Texas warship has a lengthy history in the Lone Star State after serving in both World Wars. Built in 1914, the world's last surviving super-dreadnought was part of the U.S. naval force that occupied the Mexican port city of Veracruz in 1914, and decades later the ship's 14-inch guns provided artillery support during the D-Day.United States Army S.F.C. "It's a pretty pivotal moment in the life of the Battleship Texas and our ability to take this final step ," he said."It's supposed to be beautiful over the weekend," he said."The weather's going to be great and, it's a great time of year. not only to come down to the ship, but also to the battle grounds.
