“Walk 11 miles to work, walk home, gaze at the wall while sitting on the floor eating iceberg lettuce. Got it.'

Careless spending on pricey coffee drinks has become a common scapegoat for irresponsible money management and poor retirement saving — and consumers say that’s a problem.

The problem: Those small purchases may have big meaning to consumers. Some people value the time it takes to go to a local cafe, pick up a latte and drink it, like “Broke Millennial” author Erin Lowry, who has a line item in her budget specifically for to-go coffee. Consumers don’t take kindly to this sort of advice. Twitter erupted when Chase JPM, +1.73% tweeted a joke about potential reasons a bank account may be low, including buying coffee and taking cabs, eliciting criticism from comedian Patton Oswalt and presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren. There was also a backlash recently when USA Today tweeted about what the average Americans spends on nonessentials.

“Walk 11 miles to work, walk home, gaze at the wall while sitting on the floor eating iceberg lettuce. Got it,” one person said. “At least four different items on this list add up to: food, which is something human beings need to survive,” another person said. “Online shopping? You’re not specifying what people are shopping for. You can buy essentials online. People without, again, cars or places to park them often have to,” she added.
